I've been paying attention to mostly just swimming, as Auburn has an amazing swimming program with a bunch of grads over there. Kirsty Coventry and Margaret Hoelzer just won silver and bronze in the 100m backstroke (and are also favored to win the 200m backstroke later this week) and Eric Shanteau is gearing up for the 200m breaststroke.

Come on now Satertek. Lets keep it SEC and add a few more people. Just going from random snipits, I know there are a TN and UGA (think both either medaled or are in medal contention) female swimmers in the hunt.

P.S. Only a few more weeks til its SEC football time! Do you really see Auburn beating Bama this year? I think its about time for them to start their winning streak. I think Tenn and ... maybe a school you really really like are on their way out. (this is from a Georgia fan). Altho over all, I believe 95% of our conference domintates anybody in any other con (except USC who plays nobody and beats nobody, but recruits f'n Everybody (yay for healthy players!)). Ok.. Wonder if i should start a College football thread. I'd think it would be full of just you, me and maybe avl (altho. he never posts) .

Hard enough to keep up with just Auburn with everyone scattered across dozens of events and in different countries, lol.

We've got a new QB (or four, still don't know who's starting they're all awesome) so this season is pretty much up in the air until we see how they perform on their own. If we can hang in there, we'll win the west and take on Florida who will win the east (Georgia is already cursing ranking at #1, heh).

indians are weird, they finally get an individual gold medal...and they exchange sweets

"People poured on to the streets in several cities, strangers hugged each other and exchanged sweets and congratulatory messages after the victory."

"Neighbors and strangers streamed in and were offered sweets at the family home in the northern city of Chandigarh."
weirdos

hey, congratulations, heres some candy

Wow, so judgmental... I'm sure us Americans do some things that seem very strange to them as well. Having spent 2 years in South-East Asia, 6 months in the Middle East and 3 years in Europe, I can tell you I have seen many foreign customs we would consider bizarre. Sometimes, I took the time to try to understand and when provided explanations, I could understand better WHY they did whatever it was that seemed so odd to me at first. Some of them still made no sense to me - guess you have to be a native to understand sometimes.

Anyone know why they exchanged sweets?

Oh i'm sure we're weird too, and I'm sure it isn't as weird as the article made it sound. Its just a funny image for me to see a bunch of random strangers coming out of their houses and roaming the streets trading lollypops.

People in developing countries do the cheesiest things. You should see some of the incredibly embarrassing things Filipinos do. Americans do them as well but usually because they want to be sardonic/ironic, which itself stems from a sense of superiority.

Anyway, congrats to India! (If the Philippines ever gets a medal for anything, we'll trump everyone on the cheesy victory behavior, I can guarantee it)

The Olympics thus far have been very entertaining. I'm quite pleased. That being said, Canada still hasn't won anything... as usual. No surprise there, we usually suck. Wait until 2010 here in Vancouver. It's going to be nuts! You guys should all come hang out here in Vancouver and visit me during the Olympics. Yes indeed, that would be very uber.

they do the same sort of thing at weddings, the people to be married feed each other sweets and honey to signify a long and happy life or something
