Right now I'm running: View distance decreased Both improves my FPS a bit and gives the world a bit more of an apocalyptic feel. GNR -- More Where That Came From - My favorite. Adds 100 new period relevant songs to the radio. They're big downloads from a slow server, so so far I've only gotten the first 40. FOOK - Actually....I'm not exactly sure what this does. Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch - Ditto, but I assume it just fixes bugs.
And using the Fallout Mod Manager, which like it's Oblivion counterpart, is really handy. |

| | Re: Fallout 3 for $25 Worth it? Well, I went ahead and purchased it and have been playing it quite a bit. It definitely has that Oblivion feel, which made me fall in love with that game years ago. The open environment where you can travel anywhere. Take the borken road or hoof it over the rocky terrain.
I must say though, there are some noticeable improvements since Oblivion. Unfortunately, with the span of time between both game releases, I did expect qutie a bit more from the graphics to be honest. I have the graphics pumped up to high, just below ultra, and I can really see the poor brushwork in the game. They do a lot of cheating with textures, which gives it that old graphics feel to the game. Even so, I'd have to agree that you won't find a better post-nuclear RPG available.
As for the gamepley, overall, I'd have to say that enjoyed Oblivion more. I'm sure that i'm not too far into Fallout yet, but by now in Oblivion, I had a horse to ride across the countryside. That was a blast. So far in Fallout, I have worn holes through my boots with all of the running around. The VAT is an interesting new feature, although none of the weapons seem to be nearly as fun as the free-form crossbow fighting in oblivion. I don't know, it just seemed like combat was way more fun in Oblivion than it is in Fallout. I don't know how a raider can keep swinging a bat at me after being shot in the head 2x with a shotty. Simply amazing!
Since the story is emmersive and the exploring and leveling is enough to keep things moving, I'll keep playing Fallout. I'm hoping that it gets better, if not, I'll get bored rather quickly and just uninstall it.
Thank you everyone for your feedback on the game, once you made the connection with Oblivion I took a gamble. It's not bad for $25, but I wouldn't pay more than $30. |

Best gun in the game: Lincoln's Repeater. Snipe those super-muties from miles away! |

| | Re: Fallout 3 for $25 Worth it? It really is good, but I gotta say, almost all of my favorite weapons and most commonly used come from the fallout expansions. Gauss rifle from anchorage (yes, theres a glitch that gives it to you outside of the simulation). Infiltrator, the silenced assault rifle from the pitt. I have to assume you've only played to level 5 or so if you find the weapons boring. There is an absolutely ridiculous amount of diversity throughout the weapons, especially the custom made ones.

| | Re: Fallout 3 for $25 Worth it? I've had it for a couple of months. I enjoy it like Oblivion but you can still tell it is a port from a console. Not particularly polished and can be a downright bitch to get the settings right for a particular driver and video card. I'm running 1920x? on a 4870x and still get the occasional slow down. I just want a card that will let me run 2560x1600 with the setttings on high for tf2. Seems like it is still a ways off. |

Why couldn't they let us have the ability to learn the skill to fix up one of the motocycles for us to ride? Something, other than just running around would have made this a more enjoyable exploring experience. I'm just saying that this game could have been a lot more fun if they had implemented more Mad Max type of features into it. In some ways, it seems a little nerfed from Oblivion (perhaps it is due to being a console port). |

| | Re: Fallout 3 for $25 Worth it? It's not a port; a port is something that starts somewhere, THEN is brought over. This is dual-developed for both. HOWEVER! The upside is, as I mentioned earlier: IT IS MODDABLE. Every complaint you have? Fixable with a mod. It's even possible(I haven't looked at mods in months, I should) that they've made the aforementioned fixed-up motorcycles for you to ride across the wasteland. And yes, they even have mods for what G1lass mentioned...lol

| | Re: Fallout 3 for $25 Worth it? I didn't have to mod out Oblivion for it to be fun. It was right out of the box. The fact that players would need to mod out Fallout to attempt getting close to the fun gameplay that was out of the box in Oblivion... quite poor imo. I'll check out the mods later though. Like I told my son (who is playing Oblivion), "Fallout seems a bit more tedious and work compared to Oblivion. Even the fighting sequences are faulty and boring." These are just my opinions anyway. In a way, Fallout introduces a turn-based element to the fights, which I left behind turn-based games some 15 years ago. |

| | Re: Fallout 3 for $25 Worth it? One part that I like about the Fallout travel compared to Oblivion, is not everything looks the same. If you get into building your own melee weapons, traversing the area between towns is, for some reason, a little more exciting than coming across unpicked nirnroots. It's also a lot more different, Oblivions areas away from towns look exactly the same, with a few scattered Oblivion gates here and there. I guess I should say it's a little more fun exploring.
One thing that I missed greatly about Oblivion was the open endedness. I know you get different quests and what not, but there's nothing to organize that for you. Which means you roam until you find a quest giver. Oblivion had guilds that did most of that stuff for you. It told you where to go, who to kill, who to get drunk and rob, etc. With Fallout, the lack of epic quest chains made it feel a bit more scattered. The gameplay more than made up for it, and unlike Oblivion you didn't feel empty after beating the game (there's still a good 6 hours of exploring other vaults, traversing terrain, etc)
Be sure to post back what you think after a few days

| | Re: Fallout 3 for $25 Worth it? You don't "need" to mod fallout for it to be fun; it is too. But, the mod site I linked is a direct offspring of the Oblivion modding side, tesnexus ;p Both games have MAJOR libraries of mods available after you play the(good enough on it's own) vanilla games. Fallout3 is pretty open-ended as well if you stop the main quest, same as Oblivion. Fallout3's main quest just sneaks jabs in at you more often than you realize, though 90% of it is limited to the bottomright quarter of the map; the other 3/4ths of the map is free-explore sidequests and such. |

| | Re: Fallout 3 for $25 Worth it? It's funny, I still have not beat the main story arc, and have been lvl 20 for a good long while now, and I still have not visited all the locations in the game. I chose the perk that opens up all the areas on the map so I can see them, which pretty much was a waste, but interesting to see how much is out there.
The main story arc is interesting enough to run thru, the $25 is more than worth it. What I'm debating is whether I should finally break down and submit to the GFWL bullshit or just wait for the Game of the Year edition that comes out around Oct that will have all the DLC stuff bundled. | |
