This map is based on a map idea by a dodgeball regular, Exile. I've tried my best to get his idea to work within some sort of theme and the dodgeball mechanics. So, we'll see how it turns out.

Objective:
Players are at rat scale (like db_pingpong) and are in a small pit in the wilderness somewhere. Unfortunately, someone thought it was a good spot to dump radioactive waste. Fortunately, there's a small hill in the middle that players can go to for safety.

It's not going to be as easy as it sounds though. First, you have the enemy team headed for the hill too, and they may get the idea of air blasting you into the toxic spill. Second, there's the dodgeball spawner right above the top of the hill, keeping up to 4 rockets in play. Luckily, this spawner doesn't gain speed over time. But, if you're one of the lucky last remaining players, you'll have 4 lovely rockets to dodge.

Curious to see how long players can last in this pit.


Change Log:

b5 (5/16/10) - Stable
+ Added a few more random objects.
+ Increased the waste rising a tad. Better MOVE!!
+ Increased the rocket spawn rate a tad.
~ Fixed the "purple" water (missing texture rendering) for the waste. Unfortunately, this build, the top view is black. I'll fix it next build.

b4 (5/16/10) - Stable
+ Added more random objects.
+ Added a flare stick prop for the rocket spawner, with the rockets spawning upward. This should make it easier for players to see where the rockets spawn from.
~ Decreased the spawn speed increment quite a bit. They were incrementing like the speed dodgeball maps.
~ Decreased the starting rockets from 2 down to 1. This will provide a grandual ramp up of rockets.
+ Added more player spawns to 16 per team.
~ Smoothed out some of the terrain near red spawns.
b3 (5/13/10) - Stable
+ Added random objects that randomly spawn at the start of each round. These provide additional safe, higher areas that are not always available every round. This should reduce the staleness of the gameplay area. Some objects offer a bridge between the highest dirt mounds.
+ Increased the speed of the rising oil a tad.
+ Increased the max height of the rising oil a bit more.

b2 (5/12/10) - Stable

+ Added a tree root and player clip in that camped corner.
~ Changed the terrain a tad to make the gameplay a little more interesting... especially in the center.
+ Increased the max height of the rising oil a bit.

b1 (7/6/09) - Stable
+ First Release

Sounds nice. I would like to see screen shots maybe?


also... as a side note, what's the iport of the multi-rocket server? I couldn't find it on the servers list, and I didn't see any server info here on the server.
this reminded me of it because it's 4 rockets.

We tested it last night and everything worked ok. So, if you're wanting to take a look, request an admin to change the map to this. For b2, I'll be re-making pretty much the entire thing based on the feedback from last night's test.

I know you tested it again today, and it was a huge hit. The rising danger water is a great mechanic. The only issue was that very high hill by the tipped over waste barrel. Both teams bum rushed it and tried to hold it, since it was not only higher than the center but was easy to defend.

Oh darn, I missed the test. I guess I'll just have to wait until it's part of the rotation. Can't wait to play it.

played a full rotation of this map
loved the rising toxic fluid
if i remember right the waste stops rising at a certain point right?
it was funny to see the one or two guys stranded on a little hill on the edge of the pit doomed to death
we found the spot near the barrel and the center hill the best spots
i preferred the hill just for the health pack, had to keep craning my neck to watch the spawner
i like the change ups

I've been periodically testing this over the past few days and players really enjoy it. I know that Exile, and a few other regulars, mentioned to make it bigger, like pit. I'm just not sure if it really needs to be that much bigger. I would definitely redo the ground. Take out the big hill and some of the high sides, and make a few smaller (but higher) hills that players can fight over, reducing the middle hill in size.

Lighting in maps have become a real pain of late. This is no exception. TF2 only has 2 recent sky textures that fit dark themes. Everything else, is a bit on the bright side for dodgeball. At this point, I may just take this map and have the dumping ground in a forest with one of the dark mountain sky textures. I'll have to slope the ground a tad so that the spill looks more like it's moving from the barrel rather than seeping through the ground.

I don't think it needs to be bigger either. In my opinion the bigger a map gets the longer rounds drag on usually due to rocket speeds not being fast enough to compensate.

When I saw this, I was thinking it had something related to the infamous oil spill. We need a map for that!

I second that... we need a doge ball map, that takes place on a sunken Oil Derrick. If you touch the oil you die, and there are like 4 oil spawners, and they activate randomly.

Your welcome guys. I updated the map to b3 this morning:
