| | Windows 7 (Discussion) Well the beta has been leaked and all that business and I've heard a lot of people talking about it ingame. Anybody running it? Everything I've read so far has been very positive. I quit Vista on the release of Vista and have not had a single regret about it. The only thing so far that I've read and didn't like is the redesign of the quick launch bar (the bar in the bottom left next to the start menu). It is going to serve more of a purpose and possibly be combined with the entire task bar. I use it to launch winamp, firefox, and show my desktop. I don't want it doing anything else.
On the positive side though the "gadgets" are going to be a part of the desktop itself so no more ugly side bar on the desktop. Woot?
Performance and boot time are supposed to be better than XP and Vista but I really don't like the 1GB RAM requirement. For me my RAM is for my games and not my start menu. |

| | Re: Windows 7 (Discussion) 1 GB RAM today is like yesterday's 256MB RAM. Get 4GB or more and it will not be your gaming choke. I run Vista64 on this machine and it's sucking 1GB RAM. I get 90+fps in TF2 cranked settings @1600x1200.
As for Windows 7, I hear it tastes like chicken.

Anyway, I've been using it about a week, and it seems pretty much on par with Vista (which is a good thing, Vista has worked great for awhile now). Quote: |

| That was the first thing I turned off, however, I forced myself to turn it back on for awhile, and I'm really starting to love it. I never liked taskbar items combining in Vista or XP, but with these new Aero previews, its really easy and keeps the taskbar nice and clean
3Dmark tests showed essentially the same results as in Vistal. I'm not seeing 22 second boot times, though I only restart my computer for updates, normally I just use suspend. Basically, its Vista, without the negative PR, and actually working well from day 1.
I'm holding out for a few more days on this dual boot then I'm gonna try upgrading my Vista install.

I'll adjust though especially if 7 is as good as it makes itself sound. I'm thinking about installing it. Anyone have any issues installing Steam or playing TF2 on it? |

| | Re: Windows 7 (Discussion) No way TF2 is sucking the 3GB of RAM you'd have left after 7 takes it's 1GB. That was my point. The RAM consumption is not an issue to game preformance. Your GPU speed, CPU speed, HD speed, RAM speed etc. will be your performance bottleneck.

| | Re: Windows 7 (Discussion) The way Windows is handling ram now isn't like it used to be. Your commonly used programs are always stored in ram in order to speed startup times, this is a great feature. So when you see 1gb of ram or whatever, Windows is actually pre-caching and doing you a favor.
I run Vista on 2gb of memory on my desktop, and it runs like a dream (minus the ATI driver issues, but that's another story). I am thinking about putting in another 2gb but until I come across a problem with just using my 2gb I don't see a point, and the desktop is basically a gaming only machine.

Again, Windows 7 is just Vista done right from the start, kinda like Windows XP was a step up from Windows 2000. |
