Ugh, this is just my luck I guess.
edit: I can get a copy from Microsoft for $55.00 including shipping. I think I'll just order from there.

I cannot count the number of times I had bsod'd on XP. Not a single one in Vista in over a year & a half.
What's this? A driver conflict in XP? oh...BSOD! In Vista? Oh, it just stops the conflicting driver without CRASHING the entire system... I don't lose any open documents.
Start-up, shutdown, transfer speeds(not to mention, XP locked up EVERY time I tried to transfer more than 4 gigs to an external hdd) all work faster & more efficiently. Not to mention improved search features, automatic driver updating, network set-up & usage. I cannot tell you how amazed I was & foolish I felt by not switching sooner.
This was on an AMD64 x2 4600, 2 gigs ddr400, & an 8800gt system. The same system I built using XP proessional & used for 2 years before switching to Vista.
The only issue I have with Vista is problems with Creative Soundcards. But hey, my HD onboard audio sounds almost as good.
Vista was problematic up until Service Pack 1. After that...anyone who claims Vista is inferior to XP either is a liar, or have a very old sysytem with sub par components that are too old to run a modern operating system. |

I just hope it isn't a digital copy.

Anyone found a list of the 'older' programs that would need this? For example I am wondering what MS Office year is the cutoff for needing XP mode. My dad is getting a Vista laptop soon and would rather start fresh with 7 and skip having to deal with all the Vista bullshit. 7 Home Premium doesnt have XP mode, so I am wondering if say, Office 2003 would work on 7 Premium (No XP Mode) or if he would have to get Pro or Ultimate.
Question 2: These preorder discount prices, are they for full copies, or can you only install them OVER XP or Vista? Can I buy one of these Win 7 versions and do a fresh install on an empty hard drive? thx

I am thinking it more along the lines of user built programs in businesses that would need XP mode.
Basically any program that won't work in Vista already. |

However, if you have an installation disc for XP or Vista (backups, etc). You could always buy the upgrade disc, wipe your drive, install an older OS, and then switch. Kind of complicated but it'll probably work. I've never installed a new operating system before (always got a new computer) so this is still new to me.
Plus once it's installed you can probably make backup discs for just a plain installation, which would still require you to do and installation twice but what do I know?

| | Re: Windows 7 (Discussion) I'm definitely purchasing Windows 7 when it comes out, but I think I'll buy it from my University since it should be really cheap, like $25 for professional. I HOPE!
I use to hate Vista, but it is definitely more stable than XP, and now I prefer it. The only problem I have with Vista is that it gives me lower FPS in TF2. I haven't tested my cards with XP though.
Vista is overall a better system and those who say otherwise never use it. People complain about it because of the mass hysteria set in motion when it was released. |

If you haven't tried Vista in the last 2 years you don't know what you are missing, granted, you are using a modern pc (none of those ancient semprons or p4's) |

I just installed 7260, though I'm not sure what differences it has over 7100. Had to reinstall anyway so I figured I might as well go with the newer one. |
