| | Re: Windows 7 (Discussion) I installed the 32 bit Win7 on my secondary hard drive and have been using it for about a week now alongside WinXP. It's pretty slick but I never used Vista so I can't really say much about what's new or not. Only played a few games on it so far though, TF2 being one of them (works fine for the most part but ctf_turbine had a graphical glitch that caused the pink/black checkerboard texture to be visible beyond the walls of the map).
The other games I've tried are Il-2 Sturmovik (works fine but graphics look worse than when I run it in XP) and Fallout 2 (works ok and plays at the desktop resolution rather than the default 640x480 but has a graphic glitch in videos and white coloring unless I alt-tab the game while having the control panel open to the change resolution option, tried alt-tab under other circumstances and doesn't do it so...yeah kind of weird). |

| | Re: Windows 7 (Discussion) Been using 64-bit 7 for a little bit now, had 64-bit Vista before and I like 7 alot more. It's definitely slicker and I haven't had any issues with anything as of yet besides Chrome, which you have to add a line to the shortcut to get it to run. After that some pages just don't load completely with Chrome so I've been using Firefox and it's had no problems. |

Windows 7 should = XP
I liked it but my ancient sound card didn't, same performance in games as in XP even with my old ass computer and it uses 1/3 of the resources as Vista. This will be the new gaming OS unless they bloat it more. |

Looks like I'm on Vista until October or so. I'd install the beta, but considering it runs out in the future, rather not risk it.

| | Re: Windows 7 (Discussion) Took another plunge and upgraded my main Vista install. I probably haven't used the upgrade option since Windows 95 -> Windows 98, so I was surprised how smooth it went. When Windows 7 first booted up, everything was just how I left it in Vista. (I always used a fresh install with XP, as it tended to get sluggish over time. Haven't had that problem with Vista)
Also, the power went out in the middle of the install the first time and I thought I was screwed, but was very happy to see that it was able to just boot right back up and completely roll back the unfinished install, returning me to my unchanged Vista desktop. I was impressed. |

oh yea the topic.
So if you hated vista (I do) will you like 7?
After vista, i've been far from excited about anything microsoft has coming out. |

After vista, i've been far from excited about anything microsoft has coming out. | Depends on why you hated Vista. If you've got at least a dual-core CPU and 2GB RAM, nVidia's (and I assume ATI's) drivers have gotten better so performance differences are negligible. Most of the blame for Vista's crappy launch (from the gamer standpoint) is on ATI and nVidia for not having anywhere near stable drivers out. |

| | Re: Windows 7 (Discussion) Didn't like vista because it wasn't done when it was released. It was a complete resource hog. Unless you were running a high end machine you were pretty much SOL, and even with a high end machine it was iffy.
Then add on the "are you sure you wish to do this" on everything you click to do. When games add different requirements for running vista I'm not all that keen on getting it.
"if running anything it takes this. If running vista add 1 ghz to the cpu and add 1 gig a ram." wtf!?! Not an OS i want to run with usually. I want my OS running with as little as possible. When XP came out I thought it ate up too much of my resources.
Maybe i'm just old. NT and 98 brought me joy. Hell ms-dos 3.1 was the shit for my kyrandia game or corporate raider. All this extra stuff i don't want to run just makes me cranky. |

Seriously though. You know you can turn off the whole, "Are you really really really really sure you want to do this?" promptornado. Also, as far as "running a high end machine", Moore's law dude! It says, build a new PC every two years or you will get pwned.

Windows Vista is good, I've run it since it went gold and haven't had much in the way of problems, it's incredibly stable and a solid OS. It took a while for the driver developers to get their asses into gear but that isn't Microsoft's fault.
Vista is good, and from what I hear, 7 is better.

I remember 95 not running well enough for my Win 3.1 machine, and my 98 machine not running well enough with XP. Guess they should have just stopped at 3.1.
Aero may look like just pretty eye candy at first. But it makes the whole system a heck of a lot easier to navigate. | |
