Asus M3N-HT Deluxe mobo
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor dual core 3.0Ghz
2x 2gb Corsair DDR2 800
EVGA GeForce 9800 GX2

Overclocking is for college kids that can't afford appropriate hardware.

You are just saying that cause both of you guys got AMDs which can't really be overclocked that well.

And yes I am a college kid, but I can afford appropriate hardware. It is really for getting the most out of what you pay for. Plus it is pretty fun.

If overclocking a 2.4GHz quad processor to 3.6-4.8GHz is for "poor college kids that can't afford appropriate hardware" then sign me up. lol I've always been an AMD guy until Intel came out with some INSANELY overclockable CPUs. If I were able to get more than 200 MHz out of an AMD processor (water or air cooled) then I'd probably still be with AMD.

When I was a poor college kid I had myself an AMD athlon that I overclocked from 2.0 ghz to 2.6/2.7 ghz. The chip ran for 6 years like that on the same mobo and I've only recently had to replace it. Never had instability or heat problems. I say AMD overclocks well enough.

Chip still works, just time for an upgrade. Socket A and all, you know.

Yeah, the older AMDs OC'd well, but pretty much anything on the AM/2 chipset has very poor overclockability compared to Intels chips.

Yup, after they switched from Socket 939 to 940 (AM/2) everything went down hill. As I posted elsewhere on this forum, my old socket 939 setup outperformed and overclocked far better than my bro's socket 940 setup. DDR > DDR2 until you get speeds above 800MHz with tighter timings than 5-5-5-15. My old DDR mem was operating at DDR-420MHz 2-2-2-4. I highly doubt anyone could get timings like that nowadays but 420MHz vs. 1200 or more makes all the difference.

AMD was the best until they switched to DDR2.

Edit: AMD lost tons of customers when they switched to DDR2. They promised their fans that they wouldn't switch to DDR2 for at least another 1-2 years. Instead, about 2 months after releasing their Socket 939's they released Socket 940's and discontinued all Socket 939 support. The only real difference was that Socket 940 used DDR2.
