Default Turning LCD Monitor into a TV

Hey all, since my dorm is pretty small, and I did not want to shell out ~300 bucks for a LCD TV, I decided to convert my 19" LCD widescreen monitor (that would have not been used otherwise because I'm using my laptop) into a tv for my dorm.

I looked into it and the only thing I need to buy is a external TV tuner. (can't post link, but there is one on NewEgg for about 60$)

The room has cable, so it should hook directly up. I'm not turning my PC into a TV rather I am just using my monitor as a TV. Has anyone tried anything like this before and would be willing to share their experience?

Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure on this so take it with a grain of salt. But if you're using digital cable from a box then you probably don't need a tuner. Just a means of converting the signal from your cable box output to your DVI input. If you're just talking hooking a coax up to it then yeah of course you need an external tuner.

I'd say go buy a DVR with a HDMI out, then could buy a DVI -> HDMI adapter.

Something like: AmazonAmazon
I don't really have experience with DVRs though, so I'm not much help there.

But the likelyhood of him having a HD box without a HDTV is slim to none.

yeah, i don't even think my dorm has HD.

I dont think the dorm has a cable box, I assume all the have is just coax...that would be a good question to ask tho before I buy this box.

Found something: Welcome to KWorld (edit: looks like you need a different box for different sized monitors, other one)

Sells for around $60. It outputs to VGA (over D-SUB) though, so you'll need to find an adapter if your monitor only has DVI input.

Asus is working on a similar one that looks like it'd be better, but its not out yet: Asus HDTV Suite-HDMI turns your monitor into a TV - Engadget

Haha, I think that is the exact model I was looking at on Newegg. I liked it because it was pretty cheap compared to others, and it supported widescreen (1440x900 for me).
